Semi-Truck collision loaded with Anhydrous Ammonia

BLOUNTS CREEK, N.C. (WITN) – During the early morning hours of January 21st, a tractor-trailer loaded with Anhydrous Ammonia got into a serious accident, according to Blounts Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Members of Blounts Creek Fire and several other emergency agencies rushed to the scene.

According to Chris Newkirk with Beaufort County Emergency Services, only the semi-truck was involved in the accident and did not hit another vehicle. Newkirk says when the semi-truck lost control it rolled over several times before sitting still on the side of the road.

Officials also say the person driving the truck refused transport to the hospital.

NC Highway 33 is shut down in both directions and NCDOT has rerouted traffic away from the scene.

According to the fire department, all crews are still on NC 33 as of 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning and expect to be for the next couple hours saying the clean-up process is going slower than usual due to freezing temperatures.

According to the Blounts Creek Volunteer Fire Department, there is currently no leak of any hazardous material and no threat to the public at this time.
