CEDAR POINT, N.C. (WITN) – Deputies say they have completed their investigation in a confrontation that became the center of controversy after the discovery of Native American artifacts.
Carteret County deputies say they plan to charge an underage person for assaulting a neighbor in the Bridge View community. Because of their age, deputies say they can’t release any additional information on that arrest.
Already charged was an off-duty Onslow County deputy sheriff.
James De la O was charged with communicating threats, assault on a woman, and filing a false police report related to what happened on June 23.
An arrest warrant obtained by WITN revealed that De la O, a resident of the Bridge View neighborhood, “assaulted the woman” by “slamming her to the ground.” Another warrant detailed that De la O verbally threatened two individuals, saying, “I will knock you the **** out.”
Following the arrest, Sheriff Chris Thomas confirmed to WITN that De la O was no longer employed by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.
The discovery of the artifacts has put further construction at the development on hold. Cedar Point Developers, LLC says it is working with the state Division of Coastal Management and the state Department of Natural and Cultural Resources on next steps that should be taken.
