Seasonal speed limits change for Outer Banks highway

MANTEO, N.C. (WITN) -Visitors traveling to the Outer Banks will be going a little bit slower on parts of a major highway.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says that on Wednesday they will return Highway 12 to seasonal speed limit reductions in parts of Currituck and Dare counties.

The move is to improve safety in the areas during peak travel season.

The tri-villages of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, as well as Avon, Corolla, and Frisco, will lower their speed limits to 35 mph from the off-season speed limit of 45 mph.

Seasonal reduction speeds will also return to areas of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, such as the area near the Haulover Parking Lot south of Avon.

Off-season speed limits will return on September 16.
