GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – With all schools back in session at the end of the month, it is crucial for drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and follow the rules of the road for an a-plus school year
Darnell says stopping for school buses, obeying school zone speed limits, and yielding to pedestrians should be top of mind as the new school year begins.
At the end of August, schools will all be in full swing. With that being said, you should be prepared to expect traffic delays in the early morning and afternoons for kids arriving and leaving classes. So allow yourself some more time during those hours. Darnell also says what drivers need to do to keep everyone safe.
“Slow down. If you see a school zone, especially slow down, there are increased penalties it is important you pay attention to the speed it is there for safety,” Darnell said.
It is also important to note that pedestrians should also be obeying the rules of the road. This includes using crosswalks, walking not riding your bike across the street, and being aware of oncoming traffic.
Darnell also says you need to pay attention in school zones and stay on high alert in neighborhoods.
Darnell says it is important to note that these are the rules of the road and should always be applied whether school is in session or not.
