Roads flooded and closed during Tropical Storm Debby in Duplin County

Tropical Storm Debby leaves many roads in Duplin County closed Thursday morning.

DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Many roads were shut down on Thursday in Duplin County after the area saw heavy rain from Tropical Storm Debby.

Driving on Bay Road outside of Rose Hill through high water that was on the roads left one car in the ditch after it hydroplaned. Residents in Duplin County say that should act as a warning to drivers.

“It looked pretty crazy,” said Jadon Teachey, a resident. “A lot of water, it was a bad storm.”

Flooding was one the reasons main and secondary roads were closed. Many roads had signs marking them as closed and for cars not to pass.

“High water is a concern mainly in certain areas,” said Chris Thomassetti, another resident of Wallace. “I know locals around here try to stay away from them.”

Residents in the area say driving with caution can make a big difference when roads are covered with water.

“People definitely need to go very slow,” said Teachey. “Don’t speed and use a lot of precaution.”

Rosemary Road and Bay Road were not the only ones experiencing problems due to the storm though. Stokes Gooding Road in Kenansville was closed off due to water washing part of the street away.

“Try to stay away from the road closed signs,” said Thomassetti. “Take your time driving and turn around if you can.”

From traveling from the house to the grocery store, simple advice can go a long way.

“Try to stay safe when you’re out on the roads,” said Teachey. “Go about 5 to 10 mph under the speed limit because the flooding can be really bad.”

The family who was in the car that hydroplaned was able to get out safely. Officials say E. Rosemary Rd might still be closed because of flooding.
