Road closures in Jones County continue after Tropical Storm Debby

Hwy 41 is closed after a part of the road flooded from Musselshell Creek in Trenton.

JONES COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Tropical Storm Debby reached Eastern North Carolina on Thursday, but one county here in the east continues to deal with the flooding.

Highway 41 East is one main road closed due to the flooding of Musselshell Creek in Trenton. The road closure starts near New Bridge Rd.

Many cars detoured their way from the high water after heavy rain led to many road closures in Jones County.

“There’s been a lot of flooding in my driveway,” said Warren Fields, a Trenton resident.

Ashton Farrer is a resident who was not home during the storm but experienced the aftermath. On his way home, he noticed many roads closed.

“I tried one way to get to my house and the road was closed,” said Farrer. “I went through the barrier, and it was really flooded. I came around the corner the other way, and that was also flooded.”

While Farrer had a different point of view from the storm, another resident had to stay home.

“It was actually boring,” said Grant Dalecke. “Nothing to do, you can’t even go out. You can’t do anything. You can’t work, you can’t do anything.”

Farrer says the way the storm left the area with heavy rain and flooding reminds him of a hurricane in 2018.

“It reminded me of Florence,” said Farrer. “It had really bad flooding at our place, and I know a lot of people around here had it worse than we did.”

While people in other states continue to deal with a big impact from Debby, he says he is very blessed and fortunate.

“Florence was pretty bad,” said Farrer. “We had to move out of our house. My friend actually lost her house.”

Officials want to remind people not to drive through the flood waters and to turn around. Officials are not sure when the road will be open, they say it depends on the amount of water that runs into the river drainage.
