Retired detention officer jailed after two women stabbed

HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A retired detention officer is an inmate at his former workplace after two people were stabbed early this morning.

Halifax County deputies say Hinton Alston was charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon, and misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

The 64-year-old Alston is a retired Halifax County detention officer.

Deputies say the stabbing happened around 3:45 a.m. on Highway 561 in Halifax. Deputies found one woman with a laceration to her hand while a second victim was holding Alston down until they arrived.

Both victims were treated and released from ECU Health North Hospital.

“It’s unfortunate anytime we respond to an assault call especially when it’s someone we’ve worked beside to ensure the safety of Halifax County,” said Sheriff Tyree Davis. “However, at the end of the day we will do our jobs. In doing so we will be fair, firm and consistent while maintaining professionalism. It doesn’t matter who you are or how we feel about you. The safety of our community and integrity of our profession comes first.”

Alston was jailed without bond and has a court hearing on June 27th.
