POLICE: Teen stole vehicle with 6-year-old child in backseat

HAVELOCK, N.C. (WITN) – Police in one Eastern Carolina city say a teenager stole a vehicle from a shopping center with a child in the backseat.

Ahkean Curry is charged with 1st-degree kidnapping, theft of a motor vehicle, felony larceny, driving while impaired, open container, damage to property, and no operator’s license.

Police say it happened at the Cherry Plaza Shopping Center on East Main Street around 5:15 p.m.

The child was found unharmed after Curry let the 6-year-old out of the vehicle at another location, according to police.

Police say they saturated the area for the vehicle and quickly found Curry.

The 18-year-old from Havelock is being held in jail without bond.
