Police: Suspect and SWAT team officer shot during shootout on S 11th St.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A SWAT team officer and suspect were shot Wednesday morning, May 22, as authorities attempted to serve a high-risk search warrant in the 900 block of S 11th Street.

Wilmington Police Department officers, members of the Cape Fear Regional Special Teams, SWAT team and crisis negotiators arrived just before 5:45 a.m. to serve the warrant, which was related to a drug investigation.

Per WPD Chief Donny Williams, as authorities approached the residence, the suspect fired multiple shots at officers, hitting a member of the SWAT team in their vest.

Police returned fire, critically injuring the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

No officers received serious injuries as a result of the shootout.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.

The WPD held a press conference at 9:30 a.m. to share details about the shootout.
