Police searching for gunman after woman killed in Washington

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – Police are investigating a shooting that left a teenager dead.

Washington Police say the shooting happened in the 1200 block of Maple Street Friday night. Rakylah Barrow, 19, was shot in the chest. She later died at the hospital.

Quiet now looms over Maple Street where the deadly shooting took place. A quiet neighborhood known for children playing and everyone knowing each other is devastated to hear about what happened.

While some residents were unaware of the shooting, others are concerned for the safety of the children who spend so much time playing throughout the neighborhood. “We need to watch our children more, watch what’s going on in our neighborhood more,” said Tewilder Brian. “We need to not be shut up to ourselves and be out in the neighborhood and be aware on what is going around on in our area.”

Others told WITN they feel parents and neighbors should be more aware of what going on in their neighborhood and work together to keep their children safe.

Anyone with information on the 19-year-old woman’s murder should call the Washington Police Department at 252-946-1444 or Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at (252) 974-6400.
