Police release name of man killed in officer-involved shooting Wednesday

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The Jacksonville Police Department has released the name of a man who died Wednesday morning at his house on New River Drive.

Officers were called to 701 New River Drive early Wednesday morning for a domestic disturbance and shots fired call.

Jacksonville police say Jammie Mitchell, 39, barricaded himself in the house with six other people.

The department’s tactical team and negotiators responded. As they helped the six people out through a side window, police say the Jacksonville man left the house from the back and opened fire.

Officers then returned fire, hitting and killing Mitchell, according to the police department.

The SBI is handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while two officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard in these situations.
