Police investigating after 3-year-old boy found wandering in Greenville traffic

Greenville police say they were called to KinderCare Child Center on Stantonsburg Road just before 11:00 a.m.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Police are investigating after a toddler was found wandering in traffic in front of a Greenville daycare center.

Officers say they were called to KinderCare Child Center on Stantonsburg Road just before 11:00 a.m.

By that time, police say the three-year-old child was safely back inside the daycare center.

The center is almost directly across from the Maynard Children’s Hospital and Stantonsburg Road in that area is a five-lane highway.

Pictures posted on social media show the child in the second lane from the curb with a woman approaching him. It’s unknown whether the woman was a passerby or an employee of the daycare center.

KinderCare sent out a text to parents about what happened. “I am sure you may know what happened and we are doing everything possible to ensure that this does not happen again to any of our children,” said the message.

Parents and grandparents of children who go to the center are now voicing their concerns. “I don’t know what the circumstances were or what happened today or what occurred but it does raise some eyebrows, it’s very concerning,” grandparent Tissany Atkinson said.

In addition to conducting its own investigation, Greenville police say they have notified appropriate local and state regulatory agencies.
