POLICE: Child and teen arrested on gun charges after man shot in Elizabeth City

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WITN) -A child and a teenager in the east were arrested after police say they were involved in the shooting of a man in early February in Elizabeth City.

According to the Elizabeth City Police Department, both a child and 19-year-old Malachi White were taken into custody and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and discharging a firearm into occupied property.

On February 23rd, the Edenton Police Department with help from Elizabeth City police say they executed a search warrant at a home in the 200 Block of Albemarle Street in Edenton. This search warrant was in reference to a shooting on February 3rd in Elizabeth City.

During that shooting, Elizabeth City police say they responded to a shots fired call in the area of Tatem Lane and were told there was a man at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center who had a gunshot wound. Officers say the 30-year-old had non-life-threatening injuries.

The child was taken to the Pitt Regional Juvenile Center in Greenville.

Detectives say they obtained warrants for White at the 800 Block of Badham Road in Edenton and took him to Chowan County Jail where he’s being held without bond.

His first court appearance is set for Monday, February 26, 2024 in Chowan County District Court at 9:30 am.
