People told to avoid Rodanthe beach because of hazards

RODANTHE, N.C. (WITN) -People are being told to avoid another beach on the Outer Banks because of hazards being exposed near the dunes.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore says exposed wires, pipes, and septic systems are now along the beach adjacent to Ocean Drive in Rodanthe.

The Seashore says it is working with Dare County and Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative to clean up the hazardous materials.

They say other hazards, such as building materials and parts of septic systems, may also be found on other beaches in the Rodanthe area.

Two months ago, a section of the beach near Buxton was shut down after storms exposed potentially hazardous infrastructure from old Navy and Coast Guard bases.
