Overnight weather plays role in fatal crash, driver thrown out

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) – Authorities say a remnant of Thursday night’s weather was a factor in a deadly crash, leaving the driver out of the car and lying on the highway.

Morehead City says the police and firefighters were called to a roll-over crash on US 70 West near the State Port last night around 11:20 p.m.

Officials say heavy rain passed through the area, leaving standing water on the highway near the crash site.

Authorities found 35-year-old Anthony Morris, II of Morehead City, thrown from his truck and on the roadway. Officials say he was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency crews tried to save him.

Investigators believe speeding caused him to hydroplane. WITN is told they suspect he overcorrected, causing the truck to roll multiple times, landing on the U.S. 70 center turn lane.

Authorities say the crash is still under investigation.

Morris was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened and evidence suggests he was speeding based on roadway conditions, according to officials.
