Onslow County man dies in Neuse River boating accident

PAMLICO COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – State officials say an Onslow County man drowned in a New Year’s Day boating accident in Pamlico County.

Sgt. David Midyette with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says it happened on the Neuse River near Lee Landing.

Midyette says two men on the boat were thrown overboard.

He says the boat operator, Jordan Williams, of Dudley, was able to swim back to the boat. Midyette says Williams found his passenger, Christopher Edwards, of Hubert, face down in the water.

The man’s body was pulled back to the boat, but Edwards died at the scene despite rescue efforts.

Midyette says the boat’s steering system wasn’t working properly and that contributed to the mishap. He said neither man was wearing a life jacket.

After speaking with the district attorney’s office, no charges are being filed in the boating fatality, according to Midyette.
