One person dead in early morning house fire

LENOIR COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – One person was killed early Saturday morning in a house fire just outside LaGrange city limits.

Lenoir County emergency officials responded to the call at 3065 Brakefield Dr around 6 a.m. to find smoke and flames billowing from a double-wide mobile home.

Firefighters found one person dead inside during their initial sweep leaving community members in shock.

Frank Grant, a neighbor, said that he told his friend, Glenda Shaffer, the woman living there was in the house at the time of the fire. He says they did not do much together but believed that she was a kind person.

“Yes ma’am yes ma’am I just told my friend Glinda Shaffer she was in the house,” said Grant. “Like I said, we never had much doings with her but overall I think she was a nice person,” said Neighbor, Frank Grant

Other neighbors say their dogs woke them up and once they looked outside, the flames were nearly put out. This tragedy sets in even more for neighbor Frank Grant with the holidays being two weeks away.

“Well I mean I hate to see anything bad happens to the person I mean it’s just terrible the holidays and stuff,” said Grant.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by Lenoir County officials with the NC State Fire Marshal’s Office and SBI assisting. Grant said he will be reconsidering his own fire safety since the deadly fire happened so close to his home.

“You got be aware of stuff ya know, electrical especially electrical with all the wires these days but its umm, we got electric heat so, you know you smell something you react to it,” said Grant.

The name of the victim is being withheld until their family is notified.
