OFFICIALS: Wahl-Coates Elementary on lockdown for nearby shooting

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Pitt County School officials say an elementary school is on lockdown Wednesday morning.

Pitt County Schools Spokesman Tom McClellan says Wahl-Coates Elementary School has been in lockdown since 8:27 a.m. this morning.

According to the school system spokesman, the shooting is not on school property but in the area of Elm Street and 5th Street.

WITN Reporter Amarachi Uche is at the scene. She tells us that multiple homes on 5th Street are blocked off with caution tape. Uche says she sees at least 8 police cars and over 10 police officers.

East Carolina University has sent out an alert saying there is no immediate threat to their campus, however, 5th Street will is blocked and will remain closed until further notice.

McClellan says the Student Resource Officer called for it after gunshots were fired in the area.

He says officers with the Greenville Police Department are on the scene and will be handling the investigation.
