OFFICIALS: Town cuts funding for Carteret County elementary school resource officer

CAPE CARTERET, N.C. (WITN) – A county board of education representative is calling parents to speak up after she says funding has been removed from the school resource office position at an elementary school.

Kaite Statler, the vice chair and district two representative for Carteret County’s Board of Education, says in a social media post the Town of Cape Carteret has taken away funding from their 2024-2025 budget for the White Oak Elementary SRO position.

Statler says it’s been stated that funding is not an issue, citing staffing as the issue.

She states the SRO position is funded by a grant, five combined municipalities, and the Town of Cape Carteret.

She’s calling parents to respectfully reach out to the town and attend the upcoming board of commissioner meeting April 8th at 6 p.m.
