OBX man gets up to 46 years for two overdose deaths

MANTEO, N.C. (WITN) – An Outer Banks man was sentenced to up to 46 years in prison after being convicted of two drug overdose deaths.

A jury this afternoon found Tyrique Wise guilty of two counts of aggravated death by distribution and several drug charges.

Prosecutors say Rachel Cockerham and George Bowman, Jr. died on September 13, 2021, in Manteo. They said the victims had passed away after using cocaine purchased the night before from Wise. Another woman also was found unconscious, but she survived.

An autopsy found that Cockerham and Bowman died from fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol toxicity.

The 38-year-old Wise was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for another overdose death that happened in 2018. Records showed he served a year and 8 months for that conviction.
