JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Students and staff at one Eastern Carolina learning center had to be evacuated earlier today to a nearby school after suspected military ordnance was found on campus.
Onslow County Schools said that it happened at the Onslow County Learning Center when the object was located by a school system grounds crew who were clearing vegetation around the school.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Camp Lejeune went to the scene and determined that the object was inert. According to the school system the EOD team said it was likely a Civil War re-enactment cannonball and contained no explosives.
Officials said the cannonball had been in place long enough that woody vegetation had grown around it, to the point that it had to be cut away so the object could be removed.
The cannonball was safely removed.
