NWS says EF-3 tornado struck Wilson County

The tornado killed a man in his home outside of Lucama on Thursday.

WILSON COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – An EF-3 tornado tornado tore through Wilson County yesterday, killing one man.

The National Weather Service released that information today on the storm that heavily damaged a middle school and destroyed several homes.

Meteorologists says the tornado had 140 mile per hour winds.

A man died when his home on Lloyd Road outside of Lucama collapsed on itself. Urban Search and Rescue found the man after a search of the home several hours later.

The same twister heavily damaged Springfield Middle School.

School Superintendent Dr. Lane Mills says the worst damage was to the 6th and 7th grade halls where sections of the roof and walls are missing. He said fortunately no students or staff were inside the building.
