NHCSO: Three teenagers charged in the murder of New Hanover Co. teen

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – On June 21, a secure custody hearing was held for three teenagers arrested and charged with first-degree murder in New Hanover County.

According to the New Hanover County sheriff’s office, a shooting happened on the 2200 block of Teresa Drive, in Castle Hayne at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19.

The secure custody hearing was held at the Juvenile Courthouse in Wilmington. The judge ordered for a closed courtroom, meaning only officials involved in the case or family members connected to those involved were allowed in the courtroom while the hearing took place.

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, the three suspects who were arrested are 17-years old, and the victim was also 17-years-old.

“The investigation led detectives to identify and apprehend the three juvenile suspects. Evidence gathered at the scene, along with witness testimonies, played a crucial role in the swift progress of the case,” a New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office announcement states.

Neighbors who live in Castle Hayne say they are devasted by the situation. Neighbors say they saw two cars speeding towards a dead-end road, then they heard one gunshot.

Neighbors wanted to remain anonymous but expressed their feelings on the situation.

“My heart just goes out to their families, all included. Because no one deserves to go through this, but it’s my prayer that the lord give these families the peace they need.”

“It’s absolutely heartbreaking. Because now you’ve got 17-year-olds one who lost his life and three more whose lives are forever ruined. They haven’t even begun to live yet.”

An attorney representing one of the families says the case could move to superior court, if the case is moved the teenagers could be tried as adults.
