Newport man facing murder charge in 2022 overdose death

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A man in state prison on drug convictions is now facing a murder charge after an Eastern Carolina woman overdosed nearly two years ago.

Carteret County deputies on Wednesday charged Joshua Holder with second-degree murder-distribution drugs, death by distribution, and sell/deliver a Schedule II controlled substance.

Santana James died on May 30, 2022. An autopsy showed she died from cocaine and fentanyl toxicity.

The 34-year-old Holder is serving a four-year prison sentence for multiple drug possession convictions.

Deputies say the man will be brought back to Carteret County soon for a first appearance on the new charges.
