Newport man facing 21 drug charges after months-long investigation & manhunt

The sheriff’s office says deputies collected 160.2 grams of meth from him through undercover buys.

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The Carteret County Sheriff’s Office says a Newport man is behind bars facing multiple drug charges for selling, trafficking, and delivering meth.

The sheriff’s office says Matthew Harris’s arrest comes after deputies made several undercover buys from him.

The investigation started in February. The sheriff’s office says deputies collected 160.2 grams of meth from the 48-year-old.

Investigators say Harris discovered the charges and ran to Prince Frederick, Maryland. Harris was extradited from Maryland after the Calvert County Task Force arrested him and served 21 charges in Carteret County last Tuesday, August 6th.

He is facing the following charges:

  • 12 counts of trafficking methamphetamine
  • Three counts of possession with intent to manufacture sell and deliver methamphetamine
  • Three counts of selling methamphetamine
  • Three counts of delivering methamphetamine

Harris has also been charged with felony probation violations. He is in the Carteret County jail under a $1 million secured bond.
