Newport man charged after disturbance at store

A Newport man was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Morehead City after police say he stole from a convenience store and threatened police officers with a weapon.

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) – A Newport man was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Morehead City after police say he stole from a convenience store and threatened police officers with a weapon.

According to police they were sent to the Jim Dandy store on North 20th Street shortly after noon on Wednesday after receiving a call about a ‘disturbance’ there.

Before the police arrived, store employees told a dispatcher that Thomas Hibbs of Newport was stealing items from the store and had shown them an edged weapon.

Police say that when they got to the store that Hibbs showed them the weapon and came towards them. Police were able to stop Hibbs with a taser and he was arrested.

Hibbs was taken to the jail and was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault on a government official.
