NEW DETAILS: Greenville man facing assault charge after fight over money

Greenville police say the fight happened at the Greenville Motel on South Memorial Drive Monday night.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – County jail records show an Eastern Carolina man is behind bars after assaulting another man.

Pitt County jail records, obtained by WITN, show Michael Smith was put behind bars Monday.

The Greenville Police Department says officers were called around 9:30 p.m. Monday night to the Greenville Motel on South Memorial Drive.

Officers say they found Cardell Williams lying on ground with injuries to his face. Records show the 39-year-old caused bruising and swelling to William’s face.

Investigators the men knew each other and the fight started over a money dispute.

Police say Smith was there when they got to the hotel, and officers arrested him then.

Smith had a court appearance scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to jail documents.

He is in the Pitt County jail.
