NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – The new project called “Re-New Bern”, a 21st-century code the city calls it, is a brand new update for the city to modernize its land use ordinances. The City envisions the project to ensure a prosperous future for residents and future growth.
The updated New Bern land use ordinance will establish new basic rules of how the land may be used throughout New Bern.
A land use ordinance is an inventory of development codes on how the city creates redevelopment, zoning provisions and standards, residential and commercial buildings zoning, and employment growth.
The Development Services Director of New Bern mentioned that the current regulations are challenging to comprehend, which is why they are looking to update them to simplify the process for residents and developers.
“We feel this is a really good economic development tool because developers come and develop land in areas where it is easy to do work. When you have an investment in any code that is clear and easy to use and consistently applied…that really makes it attractive to come and do business for developers,” says New Bern Development Services Director Jessica Rhue.
The Re-New Bern project includes additional graphic communication strategies, new housing options, and innovative stormwater management solutions.
