Nearly one billion dollars up for grabs in Friday Mega Millions drawing

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Someone here in the east could win nearly one billion dollars Friday night as the Mega Millions jackpot has reached $977 million.

Greenville resident Steve Evans says he stopped at a local gas station for his usual morning beverage but changed his mind and bought a Mega Millions Lottery ticket instead.

“I decided to take myself today to spend $5.00 for coffee. I decided to use it today to take a opportunity and chance to win the big prize and I’m not typically a gambler but I said today I would forgo my coffee and take a shot,” says Evans.

According to the North Carolina Education Lottery, no tickets matched all six numbers drawn on Tuesday night increasing Friday night’s Mega Millions jackpot.

Rocky Mount resident Wayne Wells says he’s never played before but couldn’t resist when he found out the size of the cash prize.

“Don’t normally. This is the first time…first time. It’s just getting so high that I want to take a chance like everybody else,” says Wells.

Lottery officials say the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are one in 302.6 million.

Evans says if he strikes it rich, he’ll spend it wisely and give to the church as well as others in need.

“I would probably faint and probably be unconscious for about three or four hours and then after I wake up, I would pray and thank the Lord that another day you’ve given me and another day that I have been blessed beyond measure,” says Evans.

Lottery officials say this is only the sixth time in the game’s history that the jackpot has reached this level.
