Nearly 70 rip current rescues at New Hanover Co. beaches recently

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The rip current risk at most North Carolina beaches has been high for the past few days, according to the National Weather Service.

According to a NWS report, between Wednesday and Thursday, June 19-20, 69 rip current rescues occurred at New Hanover Co. beaches, with:

  • 20 at Kure Beach
  • 14 at Wrightsville Beach
  • 35 at Carolina Beach

“If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help and remain calm. Do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly,” the NWS states.
