NCDOT: Parts of N.C. 12 passable this morning

HYDE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina Department of Transportation says a coastal highway is passable Wednesday morning after Tuesday’s severe weather.

The NCDOT says Highway 12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island from the NPS Pony Pens to the ferry terminal is closed because of ocean overwash.

Officials say crews will work to clear and reopen the highway as soon as possible.

However, on Pea and Hatteras Islands, NC12 is open and passable, but there is a layer of sand on the roadway and several areas of standing rainwater.

The NCDOT asks drivers to be very cautious on the roadway and says crews will be working to clean up the road throughout the day today.

Officials also say secondary oceanside roads in and around Rodanthe were victim to minor ocean overwash and crews will be out to clear those today.
