N.C. 12 section & ferries expected to open today after weather delays

The NCDOT says crews are out this morning clearing sand and water from the road.

HYDE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Highway 12 will stay closed in one section while ferry operations are also impacted along the Outer Banks because of recent weather.

Due to weather conditions, Highway 12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island between the ferry terminal and the National Park Service Pony Pens is still closed due to ocean overwash and unsafe driving conditions.

It will remain closed until at least 1 p.m. today.

However, NCDOT says NC12 is open and passable on Hatteras / Pea Islands.

In addition, the ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke, Swan Quarter and Ocracoke, and Cedar Island and Ocracoke have been suspended.

All ferry operations are expected to resume today at 1 p.m.

All lanes of NC-12 are closed on the north end of Ocracoke Island between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal due to sand and overwash on the road.

The road is expected to reopen by 1:00 p.m. this afternoon.
