Marine Corps commandant remembrance ceremony today

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Community members across eastern North Carolina will come together Thursday to remember the life of a former Marine Corps Commandant, who passed away last month.

A remembrance and moment of silence for the late General Al Gray will be held this afternoon at 1:30 pm at the Eagle Globe and Anchor at Lejeune Memorial Gardens on Montford Landing Road.

Onslow County Commissioner Chairman Tim Foster, Jacksonville Mayor Sammy Phillips, and other public officials will provide reflection, prayer, and comments.

Gray died the morning of March 20th at the age of 95.

Gray was a commanding general at the 2nd Marine Division and II Marine Expedition Force, both headquartered at Camp Lejeune. After that, he was the 29th commandant from 1987 to 1991.

Mayor Phillips has proclaimed today through Sunday, April 7 as “A period of remembrance and honor for the life of General Al Gray.
