Man who set girlfriend’s Carteret Co. home on fire with himself inside gets several years in prison

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A man will spend at least the next 4 years in prison after pleading guilty to arson and kidnapping charges.

The Carteret County District Attorney’s Office says that Jeffrey Joseph, 50, of Peletier, will spend the next 4 to 6 years behind bars.

Officials said that Joseph pled guilty to second degree arson and second degree kidnapping in Carteret County Superior Court last week.

Joseph was accused of barricading himself inside his girlfriend’s home on April 19th, 2023, and threatening to burn it down.

Deputies said that Joseph had physically restrained his girlfriend in the home and “terrorized” her.

The victim as able to escape from the home and deputies say Joseph eventually set the home on fire with himself inside.

Deputies were able to remove him from the home and took him to Carteret Health Care Hospital before being involuntarily committed.
