Man who police say shot at Rocky Mount officer gets 15 years on federal gun charge

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – A man who authorities say shot at a Rocky Mount police officer will spend 15 years in prison on a federal weapons charge.

Antonio Wilkins, Sr. was sentenced today in Wilmington after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm as a felon.

Back on February 9, 2023, officers were trying to arrest the 48-year-old Wilkins for stealing a car. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Wilkins pulled out a handgun and shot at one officer, hitting his service weapon and injuring the officer’s hip.

Wilkins was then shot by other Rocky Mount officers and arrested.

He still faces state charges in the officer shooting.
