Man gets 8 years in federal prison after chase with 2-year-old and puppy inside

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – A Rocky Mount man will spend the next eight years in federal prison after leading lawmen on a high-speed chase with a toddler and puppy inside.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Chi-Ali Bunn was sentenced after pleading guilty in federal court for possessing a short-barreled rifle that wasn’t marked with a serial number.

The chase in January 2023 began when the 29-year-old Bunn turned around after approaching a vehicle checkpoint in Nash County.

Reaching up to 111 miles per hour, the chase ended when Wake County deputies were able to use stop sticks to flatten two of the vehicle’s tires.

Inside, deputies found Bunn’s two-year-old child and a small puppy. They also discovered a loaded 9mm handgun, a .223 caliber rifle, a loaded drum magazine, eight oxycodone pills, a cut straw with cocaine residue, and a digital scale.
