Man charged in deadly DWI crash in Duplin County

DUPLIN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A Goldsboro man is facing multiple charges after a crash that killed a man in Duplin County early Sunday morning.

Israel Cruz was arrested when he was released from ECU Health Medical Center yesterday after being injured in the crash, according to the Highway Patrol.

The 36-year-old is charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger, and no operator’s license.

Troopers say the two-vehicle crash happened around 1:00 a.m. Sunday on Highway 11 near Panther Creek Road, outside of Pink Hill.

They say Cruz crossed the center line and his vehicle hit the other vehicle head-on. The 69-year-old driver of the other vehicle, Elmer Ammons, of Clinton, was killed in the crash, while a passenger survived.

Bond for Cruz was set at $200,000.
