Major highway in Craven County back open following a fatal crash

CRAVEN COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Officials say a major highway in the east is cleared after a fatal vehicle crash Friday night.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, U.S. 70 in Craven County is open from both directions near NC 41 which was closed due to the crash near Cove City.

Rico Stephens with the N.C. State Highway Patrol says this was a vehicle crash between a tractor-trailer and a car near Exit 400, that left one person dead.

Adam Shannon. 45-years-old of Hampstead, NC was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of U.S. 70 in a Ford Mustang when his car crashed head-on into the tractor-trailer and blew up in flames.

Shannon was thrown out of the vehicle during the crash and died at the scene.

Both vehicles were towed off after the crash.

DOT says the highway was shut down at 10:21 p.m. on Friday.
