Lottery Commission releases first sports betting report

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – North Carolina residents bet nearly $660,000,000 in the first month that sports betting was legal in the state.

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission released today its first monthly sports betting report.

Sports wagering became legal on March 11th so this first report is only for a partial month.

The lottery folks say from noon March 11th to March 31st, North Carolinians wagered $659,308,541 and won $590,750,303. These bets included those from sporting events, paid wagering revenue, and promo wagering revenue.

According to the commission, the state must tax 18% of the gross wagering revenue, which is the amount of winnings before any deductions. For March, the gross wagering revenue was $66,496,213.

The lottery says the North Carolina Department of Revenue will be responsible for collecting these tax proceeds.

The full Lottery Commission report is available through their website.
