Kinston teenager wounded in late morning shooting near high school

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – Police are investigating a late morning shooting that injured a 19-year-old in a neighborhood behind Kinston High School.

The shooting happened around 11:50 a.m. in the 600 block of Larkspur Road. Police were called to that area shortly after. The high school went on a modified lockdown that has since been lifted.

Lenoir County Schools says the school was on lockdown from 12:05 to 12:27 p.m.

Kinston Mayor Don Hardy says it was a drive-by shooting.

Kinston police say the 19-year-old man was brought to the hospital.

Hardy says he is in “a good condition.”

City Councilman Chris Suggs said there may be a heightened police presence in the Greenmead neighborhood and near the high school.

Police say the case is under investigation and as of 2:45 p.m., there are no suspects in custody.
