Kinston police say Greenville man found at checkpoint with mushrooms, weed & a gun

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – The Kinston Police Department says a checkpoint led to the arrest of a Greenville man, who was caught with psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana, and a gun.

Kinston police say 34-year-old Christopher Smith was stopped during a driver’s license checkpoint on Highway 11 North late Tuesday night at 11:56 p.m.

Officers say they saw narcotic violations and searched the car. Inside, officials say officers found a concealed handgun, more than 60 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, and more than 70 grams of marijuana.

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) says psilocybin mushrooms are hallucinogenic often referred to as magic mushrooms, shrooms, or mushrooms.

Smith faces the following charges: possession with intent to manufacture/ sell/ deliver a schedule I substance, felony possession of a schedule I substance, possession with intent to sell/ deliver marijuana, and carrying a concealed gun.
