Kinston police detail weekend shooting death of 17-year-old girl

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – The Kinston Police Department is sharing more details about the death of a 17-year-old girl over the weekend.

The police department says Dzyer Gooding died from an apparent gunshot wound Sunday night at a Memorial Day Celebration.

Officials say officers were called around 9:20 p.m. to Bill Faye Park. After being met with about 200 people there for a Memorial Day party, officers say they found Gooding dead.

Investigators say during the party, an unknown amount of people started firing shots at each other, one of the bullets hitting and killing Gooding.

Kinston Mayor Don Hardy and Councilman Chris J. Suggs took to social media, sending their condolences to the family and asking the community to come together and put a stop to the violence.

The police department says investigators are following up on leads.
