Kinston man dead after hit with car, driver turns himself in

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – The Kinston Police Department says a man is facing a murder charge along with others after hitting and killing a man with a car.

The police department says Christopher Peterson, 50, of Kinston, was hit by a car on April 28th around 11:30 p.m. Officials say he was taken to ECU Health Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and later died because of those injuries.

While on scene at the 1900 block of Towerhill Road, the suspected driver Anthony Belcher’s statements and investigation initially led officers to believe Belcher hit Peterson while trying to avoid deer.

However, according to Kinston police, further investigation revealed Belcher lied and the real driver is Andre Jones, 43, of Kinston. WITN is told Jones turned himself in on May 8th and is facing charges of second-degree murder, felony obstruction of justice, and failure to give info/aid an injured person.

He is in the Lenoir County jail under a secured bond.

The police department says the investigation is ongoing and additional charges for anyone who helped Jones will be forthcoming.
