Kinston boys, Southwest Onslow girls take first place in the East Central 2A Ranks

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) – The Kinston boys beat Southwest Onslow in a game to determine first place in the East Central 2A on Wednesday night 64-50.

The Vikings led by Tyreek Copper with 14 points and freshman Keyshawn Herring who had 13.

The Stallions saw Malekhi Hutchinson put up 19 points in the loss.

The Southwest Onslow girls continued their perfect season improving to 13-0 with the 50-31 win at Kinston. The Stallions are in first place in the conference as well at 3-0.

“This year our team is more of a defensive team. Last year we could pretty much score with everybody but this year is all about our defense,” says Southwest Onslow head girls basketball coach Chris Williams, “We try to have a motto of if we can keep people under 30 points, we can score 40 on a bad day. So our motto on this team this year is defense and defensive rebounding.”

Oriyanna Galloway had 17 points for Southwest while Saniyah White-Wooten had a team-high 12 for Kinston.
