Jones County Schools gets top marks in the state for bus safety

JONES COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Two school bus mechanics here in the east are being recognized for their part in making their vehicles some of the safest in the state.

Dustin Wells and P.J. Melendez of Jones County Public Schools have been recognized by the North Carolina Department of Transportation for their safety excellence, says the school system. They were awarded the 2023-2024 Best Inspection Score in the Eastern Region.

The DOT inspects buses annually by assessing the bus’ maintenance and safety.

Jones County Schools said Wells has been a bus mechanic for 20 years and Melendez has been for 10 years. Jones County Schools says it also won the 2022-2023 award.

Wells and Melendez were honored at the state’s school transportation conference last week.
