JONES COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – The rain in Jones County has prompted road closures as Tropical Storm Debby made her way through Eastern Carolina on Thursday.
“I didn’t think it would be that bad,” resident Morris Pike said.
Both directions on British Road and Weyerhaeuser Road were closed as high waters could be seen overtaking the roadway.
Tree limbs were scattered across the county and residents hunkered down in their homes, hoping the water didn’t continue to rise.
“We had in the past all the other flooding and it flooded all around and we were dry here so we’re pretty lucky to be on the spot high enough that’s high enough it doesn’t flood,” resident Freddie Cottle said.
Although residents aren’t surprised the roads are closed, they say it is a hassle to deal with.
“Well if I have any appointments anywhere, usually I go to Kinston for the doctor, and I have to bypass it and go around a different way, which is a little bit longer,” Pike said.
Despite the high waters, residents say they are well prepared for the storm after going through both Hurricane Floyd and Florence years ago.
“Just make sure we got enough food and water,” Cottle said. “We got a battery radio we can listen to if we have to.”
