JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – The largest county in Eastern Carolina will soon get a state license plate agency, sort of.
The DMV announced today that a temporary state-operated “express” office will open next Wednesday in Jacksonville.
Back on November 17th, the former office on Wilmington Highway was shut down after the state said it found several contract violations by the operator. Since then those needing license plates in Onslow County had to drive to Maysville, Wallace, Havelock, or Morehead City.
The new location will be at 299 Wilmington Highway, next to the DMV driver license office. It will only be open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Customers will be able to get vehicle registration renewals and duplicates, license plate replacements and turn-ins, disability placards and 10-day temporary tags, but no title transactions will be available.
The DMV is in the interview process for a new operator and hopes to reopen a full-service plate agency in April.
