Investigation underway after Kinston police officer fires shot at drug suspect

KINSTON, N.C. (WITN) -An investigation is underway after Kinston police say an officer fired his gun at a drug suspect.

Kinston police say that it happened last Thursday when an officer pulled over Demetrius Williams, 36, of Goldsboro, who was wanted on outstanding warrants.

Police say that the officer ordered Williams to get out of his vehicle in order to arrest him on the outstanding warrants.

The officer said that Williams began reaching toward the vehicle’s glove box. When the officer continued telling Williams to get out of the vehicle, officials said the man lunged toward the glove box prompting the officer to fire a single shot into the vehicle. Williams was not hit by the gunfire.

As the officer ran to cover, police said Williams sped off. This led to a short vehicle chase, and officers eventually taking Williams into custody.

Police said a search of the vehicle found a gun in the glove box as well as marijuana and cocaine.

Williams was charged with with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine and marijuana, carrying a concealed gun, felony flee to elude, driving while impaired, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The State Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the officer involved shooting, and Kinston police are conducting their own internal investigation.
