Hyde County releases new details on fatal Ocracoke Island crash

OCRACOKE ISLAND, N.C. (WITN) – Officials are sharing new details Wednesday morning about a deadly car crash Tuesday morning on an Eastern Carolina island.

Hyde County Spokesman Donnie Shumate says the county sheriff’s office is investigating the crash yesterday morning on NC12 on Ocracoke Island.

He says it happened just before 11 a.m. and just north of NPS Pony Pens.

Shumate says the driver, 61-year-old Warren Frantz, and his wife Janet, were driving north on the highway trying to catch the 11 a.m. ferry.

A witness tells authorities that the 2022 Chevy Suburban veered off the road and crashed into a sand dune, according to the county spokesman.

Shumate says Janet Frantz had minor injuries and no other cars were involved in the crash.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of death and the cause of the accident.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the north end of NC12 on the island is still closed this morning.
