Hurricane Ernesto expected to bring dangerous rip currents

The National Weather Service says a high surf advisory remains in effect until 8:00 a.m. Monday.

NEWPORT, N.C. (WITN) -Visitors are being warned of dangerous conditions this weekend along our beaches.

The National Weather Service says a high surf advisory remains in effect until 8:00 a.m. Monday. Meteorologists say life-threatening rip currents are the most dangerous a couple of hours on either side of low tide. Low tide today at Atlantic Beach at 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 p.m. tonight.

The bad beach conditions are thanks to Hurricane Ernesto which is expected to hit Bermuda Saturday morning.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is telling visitors not to go swimming in the ocean until conditions improve.

Because Ernesto could also bring ocean overwash, people driving on coastal highways should pay close attention to road conditions, especially during high tide.
